This is a common Windows behavior during installation of censhare Client / censhare Render-Client installer.

Problem

If you have already installed a censhare Client or censhare Render-Client (e.g. 5.0.0) version with the installer on a Windows system and now you want to install an updated version of 5.6.0 with the installer, you could expect that it should take as full installation path "C:\Program Files\censhare\censhare Render-Client 5.6.0\" but the new version will be located in the 5.0.0 folder. This leads to confusion.

A typical indicator for this problem is the following message on installation:

"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." The installation will not succeed here.

Attempt to explain

Important things you should know about:

  • This is a behavior outside of censhare witch depends on the installer software and Windows. It is a common Windows behavior. The used path of the initial installation is kept for the future, as this info is kept within the Windows registry.

  • To get an 'clean' installation with a "correct path" which equals the new version number, you must uninstall the censhare Client / censhare Render-Client first.
Use the Windows "System/Programs & Features", select the right Client application and select uninstall. Afterwards install the new Version, which will use the correct path/version number.

  • Never ever simply copy or rename the old installation, as if you use the installer of the new version, this still wants to use the previous path.
Sometimes you tend to make a big mistake and rename the path of the new installation to the new version number. But this is a problem for the installation of the next version some weeks or months later, when you already forgot what you did exactly on the last installation.
If you want to install a higher version later, the installer will not work anymore, because it is searching for the old path which is still kept within the Windows registry and the installer does not know that a folder or path was renamed. Just making a new folder with this old name does not help to get out of this situation.

Solution

To get out of this situation, you must repair the old installation in Windows System Control. If your old installer files are no longer in the same place you must get these again and put them to the same location as the information given within the Windows System Control Repair process will show. After the old installation is repaired you can perform the new installation.
