The XMLCommand plugin for Adobe creates a close integration between Adobe InDesign and the Java-based censhare Client. This integration allows you to edit Adobe InDesign documents directly in censhare. A guide through the installation of the XMLCommand plugin.

Preparation

To prepare for the installation:

  • Check the frequently asked questions on Adobe CC and the censhare XMLCommand plugin.

  • Check the Adobe plugin compatibility tables, before updating to a new version of Adobe InDesign, InCopy, or InDesign Server. Ensure that the censhare version and XMLCommand plugin that you use, support the desired Adobe version.

  • Install the new version of Adobe InDesign, InCopy, or InDesign Server if needed.

Note: We strongly recommend that you use the same plug-in version on all your workstations and InDesign server. Using different plug-ins and clients on the same files can cause unexpected results.

Installation

Note: Starting with Adobe CS6 for Windows, you must install the correct 64-bit plug-in for InDesign Server. Rendering in 32-bit Windows is no longer possible for CS6 and CC versions. Make sure that you install all available Adobe updates. The censhare plug-ins expect the appropriate Adobe versions.

Find detailed instructions in this Installation Adobe Plugins (1).pdf.

  1. To download the plug-in, go to the ecosphere tracker support system. Or use the censhare Client and select Stored searches|_Downloads|censhare-downloads|PlugIns.

Plugin for use on macOS Catalina: Download the censhare plugin (zip file) directly from the censhare Client Download folder. Otherwise, the plugin might not be installed correctly.

  2. Based on your operating system, select the Mac or Windows folder. There, expand the respective Adobe application folder and select the desired version of the Adobe application.

  3. In the Adobe application version folder, select and download the ZIP file for the desired XMLCommand plug-in. Use the compatibility tables to determine which plug-in version you need. The folder also contains detailed installation information.
32-bit plugin versions: As of Adobe 2020, no 32-bit plugin versions are available anymore.

  4. On the destination computer, unpack the ZIP file of the XMLCommand plug-in that you downloaded.

  5. Go to the Adobe application plug-in folder of the desired version. For example, Application /Adobe InDesign CC2018/Plug-Ins. Usually, the Plug-Ins folder is automatically created when you install the Adobe application. If not, create the Plug-Ins folder in this location.

Note: Since Adobe CC 2015 version 11.4, all native Adobe plug-ins are stored directly inside the Adobe application bundle. So you do not find any native Adobe plug-ins in the mentioned Plug-Ins folder.

  6. In the Plug-Ins folder, create a censhare subfolder.

  7. Place the files of the XMLCommand plug-in in the censhare subfolder.
    For example, Macintosh HD/Applications⁩/Adobe InDesign CC 2017/Plug-Ins/censhare /censhare-XMLCommand-CC-2018.InDesignPlugin, censhare-XMLCommand-CC-2018-UI.InDesginPlugin.

Note: Before you roll out a new plug-in, test the plug-in on the customers' test environments.

Test the setup after installation

To test the plugin after installation or having copied the files to the destination folder:

  1. Open InDesign.
  2. Create a new layout (an empty page is enough).
  3. In the Client select the menu File/Interfaces/Adobe InDesign online.
  4. The censhare InDesign palette should open now if all was installed properly.
  5. Click the + icon and select "New layout".
  6. Define a name (copy the name) and save by clicking ok.
  7. Search for the copied name within censhare, as using this method to create the layout does not open a new asset query containing the layout.
